Undergraduate Program (S-1)

The Undergraduate Program in Ethnomusicology of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) has existed since 1979. Over time, this study program has succeeded in producing outstanding students and creating ethnomusicologists who have spread across various regions in Indonesia. This study program's main focus is to study forms of performing arts related to the development and documentation techniques of ethnic music. Through the ethnomusicology approach, students are encouraged to understand the culture and traditions of a society through the medium of music. Supported by lecturers who are experts and certified in the ethnomusicology field and the use of an integrated curriculum, we are committed to providing an interactive education and learning experience to our students.

Our main goal is to produce the best individuals in the field of ethnomusicology who are competent and ready to compete on a national and international scale. Graduates of our study program have a wide range of career opportunities, from becoming a musician or artist to a career as a music or ethnomusicology teacher.

1993

The inauguration of the new building of the Ethnomusicology Study Program by President Soeharto took place on July 21, 1993.

To provide a learning process that is related to the core competencies of a proficient ethnomusicologist, encompassing theory, methods, and socio-cultural analysis in the fields of young researchers, applied arts, and artistic activities that are integrated with research and community engagement to enable the program to compete at a global level by the year 2035 is the main goal of the Ethnomusicology Study Program at the Universitas Sumatera Utara Faculty of Cultural Science. In line with this objective, the Ethnomusicology Study Program continues to develop the Ethnomusicology Laboratory to establish the Ethnomusicology Study Program as a multicultural data center and service and training provider in data analysis (quantitative, qualitative, and triangulation) using various software tools, with the ultimate goal of achieving global recognition. Additionally, the program also manages the Social Impact Assessment (SIA) and Land Acquisition and Resettlement Action Plan (LARAP) research center, aiming for a global reputation.
