FIB USU PR -  Saturday, 28 October 2023, the Undergraduate of English Literature and Postgraduate of English Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB), Universitas Sumatra Utara (USU) held the fourth International Conference on English Language, Literature, and Culture (ICELLIC) via Zoom Meeting. The seminar also invited resource persons including Winda Setia Sari, Ph.D. from Universitas Negeri Medan, Mhd. Rasid Ritonga, Ph.D. from Institut Agama Islam Negeri Langsa, and Dr. Halimah Mohamed Ali from Universiti Sains Malaysia. Meanwhile, for the other two speakers, you can refer to RAB Postgraduate of English. The two speakers are Miguel Escobar Varela, Ph.D. from the National University of Singapore and Prof. Gerard Carruthers, FRSE. from the University of Glasgow.

The term World Englishes refers to variations of the English language that have arisen in use in various contexts throughout the world. Learners of World Englishes identify the various forms of English used in different sociolinguistic situations, analyzing their origins, history, function and influence.

Language develops to meet the needs of the people who use it. Because societies have diverse social needs, and these needs differ across cultures and geographic regions, there are many variations of English. These include American English, British English, Australian English, Canadian English, Indian English, and so on.

World Englishes can be considered as a recognition of the emergence of new varieties of English from original (traditional) forms of English (Balasubramanian & Abu Radwan, 2016). The emergence of new varieties of English can be understood as a response to the limitations of traditional English and also as a rejection of the broad concepts of Native English and Non-Native English (Rajagopalan, 2012).

Although there is no single way for new varieties of English to emerge, in general this process can be described as adaptation. A certain group of speakers uses an existing variety of English, then they adapt the characteristics of that variety to suit the social needs of their environment.

By considering these factors, an activity is needed that can increase the knowledge of lecturers and students, namely by holding an international seminar involving experts in the field of World Englishes. This aims to provide understanding for students and lecturers in conducting research, analysis, and understanding the development of the English language.

After participating in this international seminar, participants are expected to be able to broaden their understanding of the development of English at the global level, conduct research in the realm of English language, literature and culture by utilizing world English theory, and implement the material that has been presented in one-day lecture activities.

The benefits that can be obtained from this activity are providing knowledge for lecturers, students and language observers about the study of English in the world (World Englishes). This activity also provides an opportunity for students to present the results of their research in front of an interactive audience. Apart from that, this activity, which is a collaboration between the Undergraduate English Literature and Postgraduate of English Study Program, will increase the collegiality and academic atmosphere of the two departments in similar disciplines within the FIB USU.
