Amid the rapid advancement of the digital era, Batak literature continues to prove its relevance and adaptability in contemporary society. The Batak Literature Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Sumatera Utara, organized a public lecture entitled "Modern Regional Language Literature in Batak Millennial Society" as an inspiring platform to encourage students and the wider community to explore how the Batak language and its literary traditions continue to thrive, evolve, and remain meaningful in modern life. The event also served as a space for exchanging ideas while fostering a deeper appreciation for local cultural identity.
The program commenced with welcoming remarks from the Dean of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Prof. Dr. Dra. T. Thyrhaya Zein, M.A., followed by the Head of the Batak Literature Study Program, Drs. Jekmen Sinulingga, M.Hum. The public lecture featured two distinguished speakers: Saut Poltak Tambunan, a renowned Batak literary figure (Pande Gurit) dedicated to preserving Batak literature, and Tigor Tampubolon, an alumnus of the Batak Literature Study Program, who shared valuable insights into the relevance of regional literature in today's professional landscape. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Tomson Sibarani, creating an engaging and interactive atmosphere throughout the session.
Through this public lecture, the Batak Literature Study Program reaffirmed that preserving cultural heritage is no longer confined to conventional approaches. Today's younger generation has countless opportunities to promote Batak language and literature through creativity, digital media, and innovative platforms that resonate with modern audiences. More than just preserving traditions, the event highlighted that cultural heritage is a living legacy—one that continues to inspire, adapt, and shape the future. Ultimately, culture is not only meant to be remembered, but also celebrated, shared, and passed on to future generations.
