FIB USU PR - On Wednesday, May 2, 2025, the Batak Literature Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, University of North Sumatra (FIB USU), held a public lecture entitled "Cognition, Literacy, and Batak Opera" as part of its efforts to strengthen academic studies of local performing arts and culture, particularly Batak Opera as a cultural heritage of the people of North Sumatra.
This public lecture aims to broaden the academic community's understanding of the relationship between cognition, literacy, and the performing arts in Batak Opera. Batak Opera is not only understood as a form of traditional entertainment, but also as a medium of cultural expression that represents the way of thinking, value systems, and oral and written traditions of the Batak people.
In his presentation, the speaker explained that cognition plays a crucial role in the creation and interpretation of Batak Opera performances, while literacy serves as a means of transmitting cultural knowledge from one generation to the next. Through this approach, Batak Opera can be studied as a space for interaction between language, culture, and the mindsets of its supporting community.
This activity also emphasized the importance of preserving and developing Batak Opera amidst the tides of modernization and globalization. The use of an academic approach based on cognition and literacy is expected to encourage innovation without eliminating the traditional values inherent in this performing art form.
Through this public lecture, the Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB) at USU reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the preservation of local culture through ongoing scientific studies. It is hoped that this activity will make a tangible contribution to the development of cultural studies and raise awareness among the younger generation about the importance of preserving and developing regional cultural heritage.
