FIB USU PR - On Tuesday, February 25, 2025, the University of North Sumatra (USU) held a General Lecture " With The Consul General of The People’s Republic of China in Medan " delivered by resource person Zhang Min, Consul of the PRC which was held in the Senate Room of the USU Rector's Office. Also present were Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si, (USU Rector), Prof. Dr. Eng. Himsar Ambarita, S.T., M.T (Director of Internationalization and Global Partnerships USU), Prof. Dr. Dra. T. Thyrhaya Zein, M.A (Dean of FIB USU), Niza Ayuningtias, S.S., MTCSOL (Head of Mandarin Language Study Program, FIB USU), Mandarin Language Students, FIB USU.
Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Sc., (USU Chancellor) highlighted the increasingly strong relationship between Indonesia and China in the education and technology sectors. said that currently USU is exploring various forms of cooperation with universities and industries in China, including academic technology training programs in Singapore and collaboration with companies in Beijing for student training programs.
"We hope that the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Medan can continue to facilitate educational exchanges and cooperation between USU and universities in China," said the Rector

Prof. Dr. Eng. Himsar Ambarita, ST., MT., (Director of Internationalization and Global Partnerships USU) said that the bilateral relationship between Indonesia and China has been going on for a long time, developing from cultural and trade interactions since the 7th century to becoming a strategic partnership in the fields of economics, education, and technology.
"Hopefully this guest lecture can provide new insights for students regarding the importance of cross-country academic collaboration," he hoped.
Prof. Dr. Dra. T. Thyrhaya Zein, M.A., (Dean of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences USU) said that one concrete form of academic cooperation is the Mandarin Language study program at USU which has received international accreditation. This program has sent alumni to continue their studies at Jinan University, who are now also lecturers in the study program.
"The role of the Chinese Consulate is very important in strengthening academic relations. In addition to giving public lectures, they also share knowledge through seminars and cultural festivals, which further enrich the insights of USU students," said the Dean of FIB.
The Consul General of the People's Republic of China in Medan, Zhang Min, delivered a public lecture entitled Together Building a Community of Shared Destiny between China and Indonesia at the University of North Sumatra.
According to Zhang Min, the concept proposed by President Xi Jinping emphasizes the importance of global solidarity in facing common challenges.
"Building a community of shared destiny means that all countries must share joys and sorrows, live in harmony, and achieve mutually beneficial cooperation," he said.
He added that through its own modernization and development, China wants to push the world towards a peaceful, inclusive, and sustainable future.
In the fields of economy, trade and investment, China-Indonesia relations continue to show rapid development. Zhang Min said that Indonesia was the first country invited by China to build the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road in 2013.
"By 2024, the trade volume between the two countries will reach 147.79 billion US dollars, with China becoming Indonesia's largest trading partner for 12 consecutive years. In addition, the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway project has become a symbol of successful cooperation in the Belt and Road Initiative, with more than 7 million passengers and a distance of more than 3 million kilometers," he said.
In addition to discussing economic cooperation, Zhang Min also touched on Indonesia's membership in BRICS, which he said would strengthen the two countries' strategic collaboration on international and regional issues. He emphasized that China and Indonesia will continue to promote the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence and the Bandung Spirit to strengthen the solidarity of developing countries and maintain global stability and development.
In this public lecture, Mario Pascal (RRI Medan reporter) also shared his experience on how the education system in China highly values meritocracy and opens up many opportunities for those who have competence. He emphasized that learning a foreign language, especially Mandarin, can be a great asset in the era of globalization.
