

Fifty students from the Malay Literature Study Program of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FIB USU), carried out research and community service activities focusing on Malay language, literature, and culture in Pahang Village, Batu Bara Regency, from May 11–14, 2026. This activity forms part of the implementation of the university’s tridharma in supporting the preservation of Malay culture and strengthening students’ academic and research competencies through direct community engagement.
FIB USU PR - On Monday, May 11, 2026, the Malay Literature Study Program of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Sumatera Utara, together with the Head and Secretary of the Study Program, officially sent off 50 Malay Literature students to conduct research and community service activities related to Malay language, literature, and culture in Pahang Village, Talawi District, Batu Bara Regency.
The four-day activity, held from May 11 to 14, 2026, was part of the implementation of the tridharma of higher education, particularly in the fields of research and community service. The program involved lecturers and students of the Malay Literature Study Program in efforts to develop, preserve, and document Malay language and culture within the community.
The objectives of this activity were to facilitate research and community service conducted by lecturers of the Malay Literature Study Program while also training students as research assistants to enhance their scientific writing skills. Through direct field involvement, students were expected to improve their academic abilities, research skills, and deeper understanding of Malay culture.
In addition, this activity also served as a promotional platform for the Malay Literature Study Program among the Malay community, particularly in Batu Bara Regency. The presence of lecturers and students within the community was expected to strengthen the relationship between educational institutions and society while introducing the role and contribution of the Malay Literature Study Program in preserving local culture.
Dr. Zulfan, S.S., M.Hum., Vice Dean for Education, Student Affairs, and Alumni Affairs of FIB USU, expressed his hope that all students would participate responsibly, uphold the good name of the institution, and make the most of this opportunity as a valuable experience for both academic and social development.
Through these research and community service activities, FIB USU continues to demonstrate its commitment to preserving Malay language, literature, and culture while producing graduates who are excellent, adaptive, and socially conscious toward local communities and cultural heritage.
