As part of its commitment to advancing world-class education, the Batak Literature Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Sumatera Utara, once again organized a World Class University program under the theme "Comparative Historical Linguistics." This academic initiative served as a strategic platform to broaden students' perspectives through collaboration with an international scholar. Beyond introducing the principles of comparative historical linguistics, the program encouraged meaningful discussions on language evolution, genetic relationships among languages, and the importance of preserving regional languages within a global context.
Held online on December 2–3, 2024, the event commenced with welcoming remarks from the Dean of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Prof. Dr. Dra. T. Thyrhaya Zein, M.A., followed by the Head of the Batak Literature Study Program, Drs. Jekmen Sinulingga, M.Hum. The lecture featured William Hesse from the University of Cologne, Germany, who shared his expertise on comparative historical linguistics, language reconstruction, and the processes of language change over time. The session generated enthusiastic participation, with students actively engaging in discussions that enriched their understanding of linguistic development from an international perspective.
Through this program, the Batak Literature Study Program continues to foster an academic environment that embraces global knowledge while remaining firmly rooted in local cultural values. The participation of an international scholar not only broadened students' academic horizons but also encouraged critical thinking, intercultural exchange, and future international collaboration. The World Class University initiative reflects the program's commitment to preparing globally competitive graduates who remain dedicated to preserving and promoting Indonesia's rich linguistic and cultural heritage.
