In approximately 3 hours, the students succeeded in making 12 keteng-keteng, 8 Surdam and 5 Balobat. At the end of the workshop, the students performed Karo music using the musical instruments they had made.
FIB USU PR - Friday, April 26th 2024, Ethnomusicology Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB) Universitas Sumatra Utara (USU) held a Workshop on Making Karo Traditional Musical Instruments. The workshop took place in the Ethnomusicology building. The workshop presented two speakers, namely Mr. Pauzi Ginting, who is a Karo traditional musical instrument craftsman, and Christopher Sembiring, S.Sn., an Ethnomusicology alumni who is also a Karo traditional musical instrument craftsman.
The aim and objective of holding this Workshop is as a means to improve the ability of Ethnomusicology Study Program students in making traditional Karo musical instruments, especially Surdam and Keteng-Keteng. There were 89 registered workshop participants consisting of students, theory lecturers, practitioner lecturers and committee members.
Mr. Pauzi Ginting started his material by explaining the basic organology of the surdam and keteng-keteng musical instruments, after that he continued by explaining and directly practicing the process of making these musical instruments. After the presentation from the resource person, students were grouped and immediately practicing on making traditional Karo musical instruments. In approximately 3 hours, the students succeeded in making 12 keteng-keteng, 8 Surdam and 5 Balobat. At the end of the workshop, the students performed Karo music using the musical instruments they had made.
