FIB USU PR - On Saturday, September 20, 2025, the English Literature Undergraduate Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, University of North Sumatra (FIB USU), once again held an international academic event with the title "Judith Butler's Gender Performativity."This event was held online via Zoom.

This guest lecture featured Dr. Suzana Binti Muhammad as the resource person, with Dr. Alemina Br Parangin-Angin, S.S., M.Hum. as moderator. This event is a continuation of a series of guest lectures aimed at deepening students' understanding of critical theories in literary and cultural studies, particularly those related to gender issues.

In her presentation, Dr. Suzana Binti Muhammad explained the concept of gender performativity introduced by Judith Butler and its relevance to reading and analyzing literary texts, films, and everyday cultural practices. Participants were encouraged to understand that gender is not merely a biological identity, but rather a social construct shaped through actions, language, and representations that are continually repeated in social life.

The event was interactive, with active student participation. Various questions and responses emerged during the discussion session, particularly regarding the application of Judith Butler's theory to the study of English literature, film, and popular culture phenomena. This discussion encouraged students to think critically and reflectively about issues of identity, gender, and power in both global and local contexts.

Through the implementation of the second Guest Lecture "Judith Butler's Gender Performativity," the English Literature Undergraduate Program at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, University of North Sumatra (USU), hopes to strengthen a critical and inclusive academic atmosphere, while equipping students with relevant theoretical perspectives to address developments in literary and cultural studies in the contemporary era. This activity also demonstrates USU's Faculty of Cultural Sciences' commitment to providing learning that is globally minded and responsive to current social issues.
