

FIB USU PR - On Wednesday, September 17, 2025, the English Literature Undergraduate Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, University of North Sumatra (FIB USU), held its first guest lecture, titled "Feminist Approaches to Reading Texts & Films," which was held online via Zoom.
This event featured Dr. Suzana Binti Muhammad as the main speaker, with Dr. Alemina Br Parangin-Angin, S.S., M.Hum. as moderator. This guest lecture aimed to enrich students' academic knowledge, particularly in understanding the feminist approach as a critical method in reading literary texts and films.
In her presentation, Dr. Suzana Binti Muhammad explained the basic concepts of the feminist approach and its development in literary and film studies. Participants were invited to examine how texts and films are not merely entertainment but also media that represent power relations, gender identity, and women's experiences in various social and cultural contexts.
The discussion was interactive and enthusiastic, with participants enthusiastic. Students actively raised questions and offered critical perspectives on issues of female representation, gender construction in film narratives, and the relevance of feminist studies in reading literary and visual works in the contemporary era.
Through this activity, the English Literature Undergraduate Program at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, University of North Sumatra (USU), hopes to foster students' critical thinking skills and broaden their perspectives on gender-based literary and cultural studies. This guest lecture also marks the first step in a series of similar academic activities that will continue to be developed to support an inclusive, dynamic, and globally oriented academic atmosphere within the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, University of North Sumatra.
