FIB USU PR - Wednesday, July 3rd 2024, the Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB) of the Universitas Sumatra Utara (USU) held an internship preparation meeting for inbound students from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). The meeting was attended by the Dean of FIB USU Prof. Dr. Dra. T. Thyrhaya Zein, M.A., PIC industrial internship for inbound students Dra. Mardiah Mawar Kembaren, M.A., Ph.D. Head of the International Affairs Office (KUI) Prof. Dr. Rudy Sofyan, S.S., M.Hum., as well as industrial internship partners from the Tjong A Fie Museum Rudiansyah S.S., M.Hum., DAAI TV Toni Honkly, North Sumatra Provincial Language Center (BBPSU) Hidayat Widiyanto, M.Pd., North Sumatra Al-Qur'an Museum Ichwan Azhari, and USU Library Laila Hadri Nasution, S.Sos, M.P.
The meeting began with a discussion from Dra. Mardiah. She said that FIB USU had established an MoU with the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of UKM. The realization of the MoU is an internship program. Inbound students from UKM will carry out internships from 15 July – 6 September. FIB also implemented an internship program by sending 12 outbound students to UKM several months ago.
UKM hopes that in this internship program UKM students will receive learning related to the orientation of the place where they are interning, including its history, collections, vision and mission. UKM hopes to learn about the various departments and teams that work at partners and can also help welcome and serve visitors related to guest arrivals and maintaining exhibitions. UKM hopes that content will be published on social media, thereby introducing partners and how the activities take place.
The Dean said that there were 10 students from UKM and would arrive on July 13. They will be picked up by the USU bus for Campus Tour, after which they will be officially accepted at FIB USU UKM students will be given 2 certificates, from the faculty and from faculty partners. FIB provides souvenirs to take home to UKM. There will be monitoring and evaluation by 12 UKM lecturers to see what developments have been obtained and experience working at partner locations which will then become a report for UKM institutions.
The Dean said that students who outbound to UKM last month would accompany inbound students from UKM. Outbound students received a lot of experience and are very supportive of UKM partners. One of them works at the Malaysian Language and Library Council, thanks to them the number of viewers has increased, many people have come to visit there, exceeding the target.
Rudiansyah said that partnering with the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities could be a good momentum or opportunity to explore what can be explored, whether the potential is academic in nature or can be related to research or community service. The Tjong A Fie Museum is widely used for research and community service. For internships, there are several from USU, but the regular ones are from the Tourism Polytechnic (Poltekpar) every semester. Students can be involved in scouting, storytelling and cultural attraction activities which run every 6 month or at certain moments such as the city of Medan's birthday. Students can also be involved in social service activities to places where Major Tjong A Fie left behind or contributed to, such as the Masjid Bengkok, the Virtue Bridge, the grave of Tjong A Fie's older brother (Major Tjong Yong Hian).
Hidayat said that BBPSU has 7 Professional Services Working Groups (KKLP), namely Translation, Literacy, Indonesian for Foreign Speakers, Indonesian Language Proficiency Test, Dictionaries and Terms, Modernization and Protection of Language and Literature, Language and Law. Hidayat conveyed what output or focus could be strengthened for them based on the KKLP placement for internship students.
Ichwan said that the Al-Qur'an Museum collects around 100 manuscripts, both on display and still in the conservation room. Malay manuscripts are relatively rare in North Sumatra, most have moved to Melaka, Malaysia because they are not maintained here. The museum has Tamiyang Malay illuminations and has not known or researched the interpretation of the book written in Malay script. The museum also has the first translation of the 400 years old Qur'an in Malay, which is interesting to study.
Khairiah Lubis as a DAAI TV journalist said that what is usually given to interns is starting from reporting procedures, script writing, taking pictures, video editing, television production in the studio, reading scripts, and being a presenter. DAAI TV also teaches how to lobby source persons, how to coordinate and communicate within the team. Usually, interns will be given a final project, which is creating 2 works of coverage. Starting from the idea, creating a scenario, going to the field to take pictures with the team, writing the script, reading the script and editing the video to be ready for broadcast on television. Luckily, on July 20 DAAI TV will celebrate its 17th anniversary, so intern students can become committee members backstage.
Laila said that the USU library had prepared a schedule for internship students and prepared a team of 14 people who would guide them. There will be 8 sub-fields at the internship site. What will be provided is knowledge of library management. After the internship has been carried out, there will be an evaluation and presentation for all the fields the internship student has completed.
