History

1964

The establishment of the Indonesian Literature Study Program is related to the early establishment of the Faculty of Literature, which is now named the Faculty of Cultural Science. This study program was initially part of the USU Faculty of Law and Public Knowledge (1964). The issuance of the Decree of the Minister of Higher Education and Science No. 190/1965 on August 25, 1965, regarding the transfer of the Indonesian Literature Department to the USU Faculty of Literature, was named the Department of Indonesian Language and Literature (1964).

1984

Then, through the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education No. 131/Dikti/Kep/1984 on November 2, 1984, the Department of Indonesian Language and Literature became the Indonesian Language and Literature Study Program.

1996

Subsequently, the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education No. 208/Dikti/Kep/1996 on July 11, 1996, changed the name of this study program to the Indonesian Literature Department.

2003

After USU changed its status to a Legal-Entity State Higher Education Institution (PTN-BH) according to Government Regulation No. 56 of 2003 on November 11, 2003, the educational system was conducted based on the Articles of Association (AD) and Bylaws (ART) of USU.

2005

All academic policies made by the university and faculty leadership refer to the Articles of Association (AD) and Bylaws (ART) of USU. Therefore, in 2005, all departments (jurusan) within the faculty were transformed into departments (departemen). Likewise, the Indonesian Literature Department (Jurusan Sastra Indonesia) became the Indonesian Literature Department (Departemen Sastra Indonesia).

2011

However, in the operational extension of 2011, it was referred to as the Indonesian Literature Study Program. In the same year, the Faculty of Literature changed its name to the Faculty of Cultural Science on April 5, 2011, according to the Decree of the Rector of Universitas Sumatera Utara No. 981/H5.1.R/SK/PRS/2011.
