Linguistics

Master's Program (S-2)

As an advanced study program after the Undergraduate Program in Arts and Literature, the Master's Program in Linguistics of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) has been established since 1997. The Master's Program in Linguistics aims to develop applied linguistic knowledge in translation studies, language and literature education studies, as well as culture and language studies. With experts in the linguistics field with national teaching certification and supported by an integrated curriculum, we are determined to provide intensive and effective guidance and learning experiences for our students. Our main goal is to enhance students' abilities and prepare them to become competent linguists who excel in their fields so they can compete in the national and international markets. Graduates of the Master's Program in Linguistics can apply and develop knowledge and technology in theoretical linguistics, applied linguistics, literature, and culture.

Graduates of the Master's Program in Linguistics have the potential to carry out their professions in various fields, such as translators, educational practitioners (language teachers), and writers.

History

1997

The Universitas Sumatera Utara Faculty of Cultural Science (FIB USU) Master's Program in Linguistics was established through the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education of the Ministry of National Education (Depdiknas) No. 115/Dikti/Kep/1997 dated October 21, 1997.

2006

Based on the Decree of the Rector of USU No. 400/JO5/SK/AK/2006 dated February 18, 2006, the Literary Discourse Analysis Concentration and Arabic Language Linguistics Concentration were established.

2008

In 2008, through the Decree of the Rector of USU No. 191/H.1.2 SK/PRS/2009, dated January 22, 2009, the Japanese Language Linguistic concentration was established. Additionally, through the Decree of the Rector of USU No. 190/H.1.2 SK/PRS/2009, dated January 22, 2009, the Translation Studies Concentration was also established.

2009

In 2009, the Director General of Higher Education entrusted the USU Linguistics Study Program to manage the Rare Oral Tradition Studies Program with BPPS scholarships.

2014

With the enactment of Regulation of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 49 of 2014 on the National Standards for Higher Education, the Master's Program in Linguistics has a profile as linguistic scholars and observers/researchers/practitioners of culture. Therefore, students must write scientific papers in accredited journals and reputable international journals.
