One of the strengths of the Historical Science Department at FS USU (now the USU Faculty of Cultural Science Undergraduate Program in Historical Science) is the close connection between history courses and local context. The educators always encouraged us to explore, get to know, and understand the sequence of local events, realities, and local social phenomena that impact the development of the North Sumatran society and the students' respective regions. The proximity of the course materials and the encouragement sharpen our sense of being objective and critical in observing and understanding why social realities can change and how different social realities are interconnected. This sense, which needs to be continuously honed, has become a valuable knowledge and asset from the Historical Science Study Program at the USU Faculty of Cultural Science in our professional endeavors to this day.
