Undergraduate Program (S-1)

The Undergraduate Program in English Literature of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) is one of the study programs in the Faculty of Cultural Science that has produced outstanding students and made them recognized experts in English literature both domestically and abroad. This study program's main focus is to study the content, artistic character, aesthetics, originality, and beauty of English texts or literary works. Supported by lecturers who are experts in English literature with national teaching certifications and the use of an integrated curriculum, we are committed to providing our students with an interactive education and learning experience. Our goal is to create graduates who are the best in the field of English literature and able to compete at the national and international levels.

Many career opportunities are open to English Literature graduates, such as becoming translators, public relations, tour guides, and even working in international organizations.

History

1965

Credibly, the English Literature Study Program has been a legitimate institution within the USU Faculty of Cultural Science since it was established in 1966 to date.

1978

In 1978, the English Literature Study Program was developed into two separate departments, namely the English Literature Study Program and the English Language Study Program.

1996

As the educational institution continued to grow, a simplification of departments in higher education institutions was conducted based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education No. 208/Dikti/Kep/96 dated June 11, 1996, on Study Programs and Undergraduate Programs at USU. Following the issuance of this decree, the English Literature Department and the English Language Department were merged into the English Literature Study Program. In line with the latest developments, the English Literature Study Program changed its name to the English Literature Study Program.

2011–2015

In terms of academic credibility, the implementation of the study program from 2011 to 2015 was led by a study program head with a Ph.D. degree, assisted by a secretary with a Ph.D. degree. The head of the study program is selected every five years through an open election by the lecturers of the English Literature Study Program, following an open nomination system according to the procedures at USU. The selection is then submitted to the Dean of the Faculty of Cultural Science and further to the Rector of USU. This period’s leadership, consisting of the head and the secretary, was officially appointed based on the Decree of the Minister of Higher Education and Science of the Republic of Indonesia No. 190/1965.

To create a conducive academic atmosphere to produce high-quality graduates.
To apply interdisciplinary studies in English culture, language, and literature for Indonesia's social, economic, cultural, and local wisdom development.
To conduct research and scientific works for the development of innovative studies based on new paradigms of science and technology with TALENTA-based learning of English culture, language, and literature.
To conduct community service in the fields of English literature, language, and culture based on TALENTA to improve the quality of education in Indonesia.
To establish cooperation with various national and international institutions in the development of English culture, language, and literature.

The production of graduates who have Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of equal to or greater than 3.00 to equal to or greater than 3.50 by the year 2021; Competence in life skills; Effective proficiency in the English language; Waiting period for employment of equal to or less than 6 months to equal to or less than 4 months by the year 2021; Length of study equal to or less than 4 years by the year 2021; Proficiency in information and communication technology.
Submission of scientific research reports in the field of English language education, with a minimum of 1 report per year per lecturer.
Submission of community service activity reports, with a minimum of 1 report per year per lecturer.

Students Organization

Ikatan Mahasiswa Sastra Inggris (IMSI)

Ikatan Mahasiswa Sastra Inggris (IMSI or the English Literature Student Association) was established in November 1982. IMSI's emblem consists of a cat, a book, and a pen, symbolizing that English Literature students are knowledgeable, creative, and intellectual students. Why is the symbol of a black cat used in IMSI's logo? This is because, in the era of English literature, the symbol of a black cat was often used in works as an identity. Joining IMSI provides opportunities for students to enhance their understanding of English literature and culture as well as build a network with fellow students. Through various regular activities of the organization, such as discussions and seminars held by IMSI, students can share knowledge, sharpen skills, and gain valuable organizational experience.
