Japanese Literature

Japanese literature or language is one of the foreign languages that has its own uniqueness and distinctive characteristics. This uniqueness and distinctiveness made me, as a new student at that time, confused and struggled to understand it. Fortunately, the Japanese Literature Study Program at USU has competent and expert lecturers who guided and taught us new students well. As for my current job, many might say that the Japanese Literature Study Program and the banking industry are not related. I can say that it is not entirely true. From my time studying in the USU Japanese Literature Study Program, there are knowledge and benefits that can be applied in the world of work. One example is the Japanese culture of discipline. Literature about Japanese culture I received during my studies can be absorbed and applied in my work life.

The USU Japanese Literature Study Program was where I first learned and directly engaged with the Japanese language and culture. Of course, learning to communicate in Japanese was essential, but studying in the Japanese Literature Study Program also provided me with the opportunity to connect with Japanese lecturers, allowing me to practice communication in Japanese, delve into how the language was formed, Japanese culture, get closer to Japanese history, and much other knowledge that piqued my interest in exploring Japan further as well as helped me broaden my insights and perspectives. The knowledge I gained from the program assisted me in achieving success in the JLPT exam (I am now certified with JLPT N1) and my employment in a Japanese company in Indonesia, to currently working in Japan.

It is an honor for me to be a part of the extended family of the Japanese Literature Department of Universitas Sumatera Utara, one of the prestigious universities in North Sumatra. Studying in the USU Japanese Literature has been an extraordinary experience for me. Throughout my studies, the lecturers have been friendly and approachable, making communication with them smooth and pleasant. Expert and competent lecturers in their respective fields have created a comfortable and easy-to-follow learning environment. Beyond teaching the course materials such as sentence patterns, listening exercises, or reading practices, the lecturers also strive to help students achieve their dreams by offering programs like Summer Jobs in Japan. An example of the lecturers’ care and support for the students can be seen in my participation in a Japanese speech competition. The lecturers were incredibly supportive and provided guidance during the preparation phase. They assisted me in improving the content of my speech and conducted intensive practice sessions, allowing me to deliver my best performance.
