FIB USU PR - Thursday, May 2nd 2024, the Chinese Language Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB), Universitas Sumatra Utara (USU) held a Workshop "Facing Mental Health Challenges while Studying Abroad: Tips and Sources of Support". The workshop was held at The Gade Creative Lounge USU Library. The workshop was attended by resource persons Effendy Pangestu, Lecturer in the Chinese Language Study Program and Students of the 2021, 2022 and 2023 Chinese Language Study Program.


The workshop discussed various mental health challenges that may be faced by students studying abroad, such as anxiety, depression, loneliness, and cultural stress. Causes and signs of poor mental health, namely identifying common causes of mental health problems, and recognizing the signs that someone needs help or support. Strategies for managing mental health include exercise, meditation, managing stress, and creating a strong social network, as well as introducing mental health resources available abroad, including counseling and student support services.

In the workshop, students were also invited to do case studies and group discussions by analyzing case studies regarding the experiences of students who faced mental health challenges while studying abroad, sharing experiences and effective strategies.

This workshop provides valuable insight for participants regarding the importance of mental health in study abroad trips. Participants are given practical strategies for managing everyday stress and challenges, and are provided with knowledge about resources they can utilize if they experience difficulties. It is hoped that this workshop can help increase awareness of mental health and create a more supportive environment for students who will study abroad.
