FIB USU PR - On Tuesday, 3 February 2026, the chinese language program of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB), Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), in collaboration with the university leadership, welcomed a delegation from the Confucius Institute and Xihua University, China. The meeting took place at the Equity Meeting Room, 3rd Floor, Rectorate Building of USU.

 

The event was attended by Prof. Dr. Apt. Poppy Anjelisa Zaitun Hasibuan, M.Si. (Vice Rector for Research, Community Service, and Cooperation, USU), Prof. Dr. Dra. T. Thyrhaya Zein, M.A. (Dean of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, USU), Arif Nuryawan, S.Hut., M.Si. (Secretary of the Directorate of Internationalization and Global Partnerships), Prof. Dr. dr. Dewi Masyithah Darlan, DAP&E.MPH.Sp.Park (Internationalization Program Manager), and Niza Ayuningtias, S.S., MTCSOL (Head of the Mandarin Study Program, FIB USU).

 

The meeting was officially opened by Prof. Dr. Eng. Himsar Ambarita, S.T., M.T., Director of the Directorate of Internationalization and Global Partnerships, who expressed appreciation for the visit.
“USU is highly open to international collaborations that are academically relevant and sustainable. This audience serves as an initial step toward building synergy, particularly in the development of language, culture, and academic exchange,” he stated.

 

The delegation from the Confucius Institute, represented by Confucius Institute at Universitas Sebelas Maret in cooperation with Xihua University, presented their institutional profile and experience in managing the Confucius Institute at Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS). The presentation was delivered by Dr. Hou Mengyao, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at UNS and Senior Lecturer at Xihua University. She explained that Xihua University, established in 1960, is a comprehensive provincial university in Sichuan with academic strengths in language and literature, media studies, social sciences, and engineering.

 

In her presentation, Dr. Hou highlighted opportunities for collaboration in Chinese Language and Literature, language program development, cultural research, as well as student and faculty exchange schemes.


“We see strong potential for collaboration with USU, particularly through the Faculty of Cultural Sciences. This partnership can be developed gradually, beginning with language and culture, and later expanded to other fields in accordance with the readiness of both institutions,” she remarked.

 

The delegation also elaborated on the role of the Confucius Institute as a center for Chinese language and cultural education, actively organizing various programs including Mandarin language courses, teacher training, HSK and HSKK proficiency tests, and cultural activities. The experience of the Confucius Institute at UNS was presented as a reference model for potential development at USU.

In response, USU representatives expressed interest in exploring concrete cooperation with the Confucius Institute and Xihua University, particularly involving the Faculty of Cultural Sciences. Potential initiatives discussed included strengthening the chinese language Program, developing internationally collaborative curricula, facilitating academic exchanges, and organizing language and cultural activities for students.

 

Niza Ayuningtias, Head of the undergraduate program in chinese language, emphasized that FIB USU remains open to collaborative initiatives that enhance academic quality and expand students’ international exposure. She noted that cooperation with the Confucius Institute and Xihua University would add significant value to the development of language and cultural studies at USU.

 

The audience concluded in a constructive and interactive atmosphere. Both parties agreed to follow up the meeting through technical coordination between the Faculty of Cultural Sciences and Xihua University to formulate realistic and sustainable forms of cooperation.
