The Undergraduate Program in Japanese Literature, Faculty of Cultural Science, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FIB USU), conducted international-scale Community Service in the form of Monitoring and Evaluation (Monev) of the International Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) Internship Program at ORIX Rent a Car Miyakojima, Miyakojima City, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. The activity was conducted from February 15–21, 2025, as part of the study program's efforts to monitor the implementation of the internship program while obtaining input regarding students' experiences in the Japanese work environment.
The internship program provided students with opportunities to gain direct work experience while developing technical and interpersonal skills in accordance with their field of study. For students of the Undergraduate Program in Japanese Literature, internship experience in Japan also provided an opportunity to interact directly with Japanese society, use the Japanese language, and understand Japanese culture in the context of everyday life and work.
The internship program that was part of this activity was a collaboration between the private sector Go Gakko and the Undergraduate Program in Japanese Literature FIB USU in organizing the Certified Internship Program. Based on the activity report, the cooperation was stipulated in MoU No. 011/GO GAKKO-MoU/VIII/2022 and 10608.1/UN5.1.R/KPM/2022. The program was designed to help students fulfill academic requirements while gaining direct experience in the field.
In its implementation, the Monev activity was conducted through inspections and discussions with the management of ORIX Rent a Car Miyakojima. The Undergraduate Program in Japanese Literature team also reviewed the locations where students carried out their internships and stayed during the program. The review was part of monitoring the students' conditions while undertaking the program in Japan.
One of the focuses of the activity was evaluating students' performance and ethics during the internship program. The Community Service team conducted interviews with students as well as interviews and direct discussions with company management regarding student performance and ethics. The activity provided an opportunity for the study program to obtain feedback regarding students' experiences and the implementation of their duties in an actual work environment.
Through the internship program, students also had the opportunity to apply the knowledge they had learned during their studies. Direct work experience in Japan can support the development of communication, teamwork, and responsibility skills required in a professional environment. This experience also provided students with an overview of the working environment in Japan for those interested in pursuing careers in the country after completing their education.
The results of the monitoring and evaluation subsequently served as input for the development of learning in the Undergraduate Program in Japanese Literature. Based on the activity outcomes reported, the interviews and discussions provided information regarding students' performance and shortcomings in Japanese language proficiency and understanding of Japanese culture. This information was planned to serve as a reference for improving courses and the curriculum of the Undergraduate Program in Japanese Literature in the future.
In addition to evaluating students, the activity was also expected to strengthen the relationship between the Undergraduate Program in Japanese Literature FIB USU and industries in Japan. The cooperation was not only related to the implementation of international internship programs but was also expected to open opportunities for graduates and alumni of the Undergraduate Program in Japanese Literature who wish to pursue careers in the car rental industry in Japan.
The activity documentation showed a meeting between the Community Service team and the Director of ORIX Rent a Car Miyakojima, including the presentation of a souvenir and interaction with students of the Undergraduate Program in Japanese Literature who were undertaking internships. The Community Service team also visited the students' accommodation and discussed their conditions during the program.
This International Community Service activity was coordinated by Alimansyar, S.S., M.A., Ph.D., as the team leader, with Prof. Dr. Dra. T. Thyrhaya Zein, M.A., Rani Arfianty, S.S., M.Phill, Irwan, S.S., M.Si., and Ghaisani Adnjani CH, S.S., M.Si., as members.
The Monitoring and Evaluation of the International Internship Program at ORIX Rent a Car Miyakojima was one of the efforts of the Undergraduate Program in Japanese Literature FIB USU to support the quality of students' learning experiences through work experience in Japan. Through inspections, interviews, and discussions with the company and students, the study program obtained input regarding student performance, language proficiency, cultural understanding, and ethics. The results of the activity are expected to serve as material for developing learning and the curriculum while strengthening the study program's cooperation with industries in Japan.
