FIB USU PR - On Friday, March 15, 2024, the Indonesian Literature Study Program of Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB) Universitas Sumatra Utara (USU) prepared students to become champions in a national competition together with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) in carrying out Technical Guidance on Essay Writing for the National Competition by presenting resource person Suyadi, S.Pd., M.Si., (BRIN Language, Literature and Community Research Center) at the FIB USU's T. Amin Ridwan Hall.
FIB USU Dean Prof. Dr. Dra. T. Thyrhaya Zein, M.A., in her remarks when opening the event appreciated the implementation of the Essay Writing Technical Guidance held by the Indonesian Literature Study Program. According to her, this activity will encourage students to excel at the national level so that the target of Main Performance Indicator (IKU) 2 in the study program will increase.
"If the study program increases, FIB will automatically specifically contribute to increasing the IKU 2 at the University. The students who take part in this Techinical Guidance are expected to be able to absorb well what will be conveyed by the resource person, because the essay writing competition is not just about writing, but also must understand how the template is, the rules and procedures for preparing it, and what is no less important is what ideas you want to convey. .” said the Dean of FIB USU.
The Dean of FIB USU also emphasized that FIB USU is committed to increasing the number of student achievements in national competitions, especially those organized by the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education, therefore the faculty will always disseminate information regarding national scale competitions so that FIB USU students can participate.
"What the Indonesian Literature Study Program does is part of an effort to increase the number of achievements of our students. Thank you to the Head of Study Program and the Secretary of Study Program for holding this event and hopefully the results will be in line with our shared hopes," said the FIB USU Dean.
Chair of the FIB USU's Indonesian Literature Study Program, Dr. Dwi Widayati, M.Hum., said that this activity was intended to encourage and prepare students to take part in essay competitions at the national level. "Essays combine facts and opinions, and express the author's ideas, arguments and emotions in a personal and creative way," said Dr. Dwi.
With this Techical Guidance, she added, students are expected to be able to listen and practice how to express ideas creatively in preparation for national scale competitions. "We hope that the students who are participants in the Essay Writing Technical Guidance this time will be more enthusiastic about taking part in the competitions that are always held in USU programs, the Ministry of Education and Culture or other agencies," said Dr. Dwi.
Secretary of the FIB USU's Indonesian Literature Study Program, Dra. Nurhayati Harahap, M.Hum., added that the Technical Guidance with resource persons from BRIN, apart from opening students' insight regarding the technicalities of essay writing, was also able to motivate students to have the courage to compete in national competitions. "We hope that the resource person, Mr. Suyadi, will be willing to provide ongoing assistance to Indonesian Literature students in preparing themselves to take part in future competitions," said Dra. Nurhayati.
Suyadi, S.Pd., M.Si., in his presentation of the material included reviewing the technicalities of writing good and correct essays. The main point he conveyed was how students must be able to master the desired topic in essay writing. "Factual research and data collection is important to strengthen arguments," said Suryadi.
Apart from that, he added, students must also understand the essay writing template (guide) provided by the committee. Pay attention to the standard of language used and the importance of applying a storytelling style so that the resulting writing can express strong arguments.
The students of FIB USU's Indonesian Literature Study Program were very enthusiastic about taking part in this activity. Also attending the activity was Vice Dean II FIB USU Dra. Heristina Dewi, M.Pd., Expert Staff to the Dean who is also a Lecturer at the Indonesian Literature Study Program, Dr. Dardanila, M.Hum., lecturers at the Indonesian Literature Study Program, including Emma Marsella, S.S., M.Sc., Latifah Yusri Nasution, S.S., M.Sc., Rachmad Fadillah Maha, S.S., M.Si., and others.
