FIB USU PR - On Thursday, September 19, 2024, the Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB) of the University of North Sumatra (USU) carried out the Signing of the Implementation of Agreement (IA) for the Public Lecture activity "Secularism In Turkey" with resource persons Prof. Dr. Erhan Dogan (Political Science and International Relations Department, Mamara University, Istanbul Turkey) Moderator Dr. Zulfan, S.S., M.Hum which was held in the FIB USU Meeting Room by the Arabic Literature Study Program. Attended by the Dean of FIB Prof. Dr. Dra. T. Thyrhaya Zein, M.A, Vice Dean 3 Mhd. Pujiono, S.S., M.Hum., Ph.D Head of Study Program and Secretary of Arabic Literature, Lecturers, Sub-Division Heads and Students of FIB USU.
Dean of FIB USU Prof. Dr. Dra. T. Thyrhaya Zein M.A. delivered a welcoming speech at the Public Lecture activity, the dean of FIB was very happy. In this case, the dean said that FIB has 15 Study Programs consisting of 10 S1 study programs, one of which is Library and Information Science and 4 S2 Study Programs and 1 S3 Linguistics Study Program.
FIB USU also has 4979 active students, the dean hopes that this cooperation agreement can be implemented in the Tri Dharma of Higher Education activities and related to learning and research.
The dean also said that currently FIB is preparing 5 Study Programs that will be Internationally Accredited by the German FIBAA Institution. Which consists of English Literature, Malay Literature, Arabic Literature, Indonesian Literature and Mandarin.
The dean also hopes that through this Public Lecture it can be an inspiration for FIB students not only to develop imagination that can be used to deepen their thinking by bringing more awareness of values and world views and also values throughout the world and throughout history.

In the delivery of the Material by the Speaker, Arabic Literature Students were very enthusiastic about the presentation of the material. In the presentation, the resource person explained the cultural life in Turkey, such as the centralized progressive approach that is considered necessary not only to run the Turkish government but also to avoid a cultural life dominated by superstition, dogma, and ignorance. There are also those who discuss, in Turkey secularism or laicism was first introduced through the 1924 Constitutional amendment in 1928 which removed the provision stating that "The State Religion is Islam" and through subsequent reforms carried out by Turkey's first president Mustafa Kemal Atatürk who established administrative and political requirements to create a modern, democratic, secular state in line with Kemalism.
