FIB USU PR - Thursday, January 29, 2026. The Faculty of Cultural Sciences Universitas Sumatera Utara through its English Department, organized a Sharing Session entitled “Romeo and Juliet: West Side Story” featuring Prof. Jin Ho Shim from Silla University, South Korea. The event was held at the Meeting Room of the Office of International Affairs (KUI), Universitas Sumatera Utara.

This academic event was attended by the Dean of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Prof. Dr. Dra. T. Thyrhaya Zein, M.A., the Head of the English Literature Study Program, Mahmud Arief Albar, S.S., M.A., faculty members, and students of the English Literature Program at FIB USU. The session was moderated by Qori Islami Aris, S.S., M.Hum.

In her remarks, Prof. Dr. Dra. T. Thyrhaya Zein, M.A., Dean of FIB USU, expressed her appreciation for the successful implementation of the event. She emphasized that academic activities involving international scholars play a vital role in broadening students’ global perspectives and strengthening the academic atmosphere within FIB USU.

In his presentation, Prof. Jin Ho Shim discussed the adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic work Romeo and Juliet into the musical film West Side Story, highlighting shifts in cultural context, social conflict, and the work’s relevance to contemporary global issues. The session provided students with critical insights into cross-cultural literary studies and the adaptation of literary works into modern media.

Through this activity, the English Department of FIB USU aims to continuously encourage critical and collaborative academic discussions while strengthening international cooperation in the fields of education and literary studies.
