FIB USU PR - On Friday, August 1, 2025, the Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB) of the University of North Sumatra (USU) conducted a Community Service Program (PKM) funded by the Community Service Institute (LPPM) of the University of North Sumatra (USU). The activity, titled "Strengthening Local Wisdom Through the Implementation of Jawi Script at SMK YP. Abisatya Sarah School," took place at SMK YP. Abisatya Sarah School in Medan. The activity, led by a team of USU FIB lecturers, also involved students as active participants who enthusiastically participated in each session.
The community service team reintroduced Jawi Script, a traditional script that once flourished throughout the Indonesian archipelago, particularly within the Malay tradition. This script holds significant historical and cultural value and is now being reintroduced to the younger generation through education.
Dra. Rosliana Lubis, M.Si. (Head of the community service team) stated that this activity aims to instill pride in local cultural heritage in the younger generation. "Jawi script is part of Malay cultural identity. By reintroducing this script in the school environment, we hope students will recognize, understand, and preserve it."
This community service program included training in reading and writing Jawi script, an introduction to its history and context of use, and practical copying of Jawi script. The activity took place in an interactive atmosphere, with full support from the school.
Muhammad Dedi, S.S. (Principal of SMK YP. Abisatya Sarah School) expressed his appreciation for the organization of this activity.
"We are honored to be a part of this program. The students were very enthusiastic and gained a meaningful new experience. We hope this collaboration will continue," he said.
This activity is a concrete manifestation of the LPPM USU's commitment to encouraging the involvement of the academic community in contributing directly to society, particularly in cultural preservation and character building through education.
