The Japanese Literature Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FIB USU), conducted international-scale Community Service in the form of Monitoring and Evaluation (Monev) of the International Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) Internship Program at Hotel Atoll Emerald Miyakojima, Okinawa, Japan. The activity, conducted on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, was part of the study program's efforts to monitor the implementation of the internship program while obtaining input regarding students' experiences during their activities in the Japanese work environment.

The internship program that was part of this activity was a collaboration between Go Gakko and the Japanese Literature Program FIB USU in organizing the Certified Internship Program. Based on the activity report, the cooperation was stipulated in MoU No. 011/GO GAKKO-MoU/VIII/2022 and 10608.1/UN5.1.R/KPM/2022. The program provided students with opportunities to fulfill part of the academic process while gaining direct work experience in the field.

For students of the Japanese Literature Program, internship experience in Japan provided an opportunity to apply the knowledge acquired during their studies in an actual work environment. In addition to developing work skills, students could also interact directly with Japanese society and use the Japanese language in everyday life and work.

In its implementation, the Monev activity was conducted through a review of the hotel, interviews, and discussions with the management of Hotel Atoll Emerald Miyakojima and students participating in the internship program. The Community Service team also reviewed the students' accommodation to obtain an overview of their conditions while undertaking the program in Japan.

One of the focuses of the activity was evaluating students' performance and ethics during the internship program. The Community Service team conducted interviews with students and held direct discussions with hotel management regarding student performance and ethics in the work environment. The activity served as a means of obtaining feedback from the hotel while understanding the students' experiences during the internship program.

The internship program also provided students with opportunities to apply the knowledge acquired during their studies. Through work experience in Japan, students could develop communication, teamwork, and responsibility skills while gaining experience in using the Japanese language and understanding Japanese culture in a work setting.

The monitoring and evaluation activity also supported students' readiness to enter the workforce. Experience in a Japanese work environment provided students with opportunities to become familiar with job requirements directly while developing interpersonal skills needed in a professional environment.

The results of the monitoring and evaluation also served as input for the development of learning and the curriculum of the Japanese Literature Program FIB USU. Based on the activity outcomes reported, the interviews and discussions provided information regarding student performance, including Japanese language proficiency and understanding of Japanese culture. This information could subsequently serve as a reference for developing courses and the curriculum in the future.

In addition to evaluating students, this activity also strengthened the relationship between the Japanese Literature Program FIB USU and the hospitality industry in Japan. Interaction with Hotel Atoll Emerald Miyakojima was part of the effort to establish institutional relationships that support the implementation of internship programs and the development of cooperation in the future.

The activity documentation showed the Community Service team conducting discussions with the management of Hotel Atoll Emerald Miyakojima regarding the performance and ethics of students of the Japanese Literature Program. The team also reviewed the administrative office and several hotel facilities, including the hall used as a wedding reception venue. The activity provided an overview of the work environment and facilities that formed part of the setting where students gained experience during the internship program.

Other documentation showed the Community Service team together with the management of Hotel Atoll Emerald Miyakojima in front of the hotel. The activity was part of the monitoring and evaluation series and also demonstrated the cooperation between the Japanese Literature Program FIB USU and the hotel.

This International Community Service activity was coordinated by Alimansyar, S.S., M.A., Ph.D., as the team leader, with Rani Arfianty, S.S., M.Phil., Drs. Eman Kusdiyana, M.Hum., Adriana Hasibuan, S.S., M.Hum., and Irwan, S.S., M.Si., as members.
