BAHASA MANADARIN FIB USU - on Thursday, Aug. 6, 2026, at the Prof. T. Amin Ridwan Multipurpose Hall, FIB USU. The book explores diversity and social harmony within Medan’s Chinese-Indonesian community, highlighting its place within Indonesia’s broader multicultural society. The launch provided an academic forum to introduce and disseminate perspectives on language, culture, history and the contributions of the Chinese-Indonesian community to Indonesia’s multicultural landscape.
The event opened with remarks from Vivi Adryani Nasution, S.S., MTCSOL, head of the Mandarin Language Program at FIB USU, followed by remarks from Mhd. Pujiono, S.S., M.Hum., Ph.D., dean of FIB USU. Representatives of the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Medan also attended the event and delivered remarks as part of the program.
As the main session, Dr. Mariana Makmur presented the book and discussed its central themes. Dr. Sofyan Tan, a member of Commission X of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), served as the book discussant. The discussion was moderated by Julina, B.A., MTCSOL, a lecturer in the Mandarin Language Program at FIB USU. The session continued with a dialogue and question-and-answer session involving faculty members and students.
The event also featured the presentation of copies of the book by the author to the head of the Mandarin Language Program, the dean of FIB USU and Dr. Sofyan Tan. FIB USU also presented appreciation plaques to the speakers in recognition of their contributions to the event.
The launch brought together lecturers and students from the Mandarin Language Program, members of the FIB USU academic community, academics, community leaders, representatives of the Chinese-Indonesian community in Medan, media representatives and other stakeholders. Their participation provided a broader platform for dialogue and the exchange of perspectives on the Chinese-Indonesian community and the dynamics of diversity in Medan.
The event also contributed to strengthening students’ multicultural understanding. According to the activity report, participants gained broader insights into the history, culture and role of the Chinese-Indonesian community in Indonesia’s diverse society. The event also fostered constructive academic dialogue among the author, discussant and participants.
The book launch reflects the role of higher education institutions not only as centers for knowledge development but also as spaces for cultural dialogue. Through the event, the Mandarin Language Program at FIB USU sought to promote academic work while strengthening multicultural understanding and fostering social harmony within Indonesia’s diversity.
