FIB USU PR - August 10, 2026 The Faculty of Cultural Sciences at Universitas Sumatera Utara (FIB USU) is exploring opportunities for collaboration with the Indonesian Internet Domain Name Registry (PANDI) to promote the preservation and development of Nusantara scripts through the use of digital technology.
The proposed collaboration was conveyed by PANDI through a formal request for an audience with the Dean of FIB USU on August 10, 2026. The meeting is intended to provide an opportunity to present the concept, objectives, and implementation plan for the Children’s Folktale Writing Competition Using Nusantara Scripts in the Digital Space.
The competition is designed as an initiative to introduce the richness of Nusantara scripts to children in creative and contextual ways. It also seeks to promote the use of digital technology as a medium for cultural preservation while strengthening literacy among younger generations.
As part of the proposed collaboration, FIB USU is expected to play a strategic role in providing academic support in the areas of language, culture, and the preservation of Nusantara scripts. PANDI hopes that FIB USU’s involvement will strengthen the academic dimension of efforts to introduce Nusantara scripts to younger generations and promote their use in the digital era.
In addition to discussing the proposed competition, PANDI also intends to explore support from Universitas Sumatera Utara for the use of the university’s name as the title of the award for the First Prize in the Batak Script Competition. The initiative forms part of efforts to establish synergy between higher education institutions and PANDI in strengthening the ecosystem for the preservation of Nusantara scripts in the digital space.
Through the proposed collaboration, the development of Nusantara scripts would not be limited to cultural heritage preservation but would also seek to ensure that these scripts remain relevant and continue to evolve through digital media. This approach creates opportunities for younger generations to learn about, use, and creatively develop regional scripts in line with technological advancements.
By combining FIB USU’s expertise in cultural and linguistic studies with PANDI’s expertise in developing Indonesia’s internet ecosystem, the collaboration is expected to foster an innovative approach to introducing Nusantara scripts to younger generations.
The initiative also underscores the importance of safeguarding cultural heritage amid rapid technological development, ensuring that Nusantara scripts are not merely preserved as part of the past but continue to have opportunities for use, adaptation, and development in the digital era.
