FIB USUPR - On Thursday, January 18, 2024, the Library and Information Science Study Program (Prodi) of Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB) Universitas Sumatra Utara (USU) held an Alumni Gahtering at the Gradhika Hotel, Medan. The Alumni Gathering was attended by the Dean of FIB USU Prof. Dr. Dra. T. Thyrhaya Zein, M.A., Head of the Library and Information Science Study Program, Drs. Dirmansyah, M.A., Chair of Library and Information Science Alumni Tessa Simahate, S.Sos., M.I.Kom., lecturer, and Library and Information Science alumni.
The presence of USU alumni in various agencies is a reflection, character and concrete evidence of the success and excellence of the education that USU alumni have received. USU alumni are valuable assets that can improve the reputation of an institution.
The reputation of alumni as professionals in various fields of work is an important value in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) ranking. USU's ranking in the QS Ranking is greatly influenced by the "Employer Reputation" indicator. The better the reputation of USU alumni in the eyes of employers, the better our university will rank on a global scale.
Employer reputation reflects the views of companies and employers on the quality of graduates from a university. This reputation includes the extent to which university graduates are considered competent, ready to work, and contribute to the work environment.
Employer reputation has a weight of 15% in the QS assessment indicators, where in the ranking for 2023 it will only reach 6.2%. In the 2024 ranking, USU is targeting an employer reputation indicator value of 12%. If we refer to USU's current ranking, based on world rankings, namely Time Higher Education (THE) and QS, USU is ranked 1201. Based on THE ranking of universities in Asia in 2023, USU is ranked 18th, and QS Asia is ranked 14.
Employer Reputation Tracker 2024 shows that USU is ranked 16th nationally out of 26 existing rankings. Globally, USU is ranked 967th out of 1519 available rankings. USU is trying to improve the QS ranking of universities in the world. Therefore, FIB USU as part of USU will carry out Alumni Gathering activities as an effort to strengthen communication links with alumni networks to be able to participate in improving USU's ranking in the world.
Alumni mobilization through study program level gatherings aims to strengthen connections and collaboration among alumni. Currently, the study program has around 900 alumni spread across various government and private agencies. Therefore, activities are needed that can accommodate USU's ranking.
The aim of holding this activity is to build strong synergy between Alumni and the Alma Mater, improve the reputation of USU graduates through the performance of alumni in their respective workplaces and provide input on improving the quality of graduates.
