Undergraduate Program (S-1)

The Undergraduate Program in Chinese Language of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) was established in 2007. Over the years, this study program has successfully produced outstanding students and highly competent Chinese language experts spread across various regions in Indonesia. This study program's main focus is the in-depth study of Mandarin, including the study of Chinese language, literature, and culture. Students will be taught all aspects of the Chinese language, from word structure, correct pronunciation, grammar, etc. Supported by teaching staff who are experts and certified in Chinese language teaching nationwide as well as the use of an integrated curriculum, we are committed to providing our students with an interactive education and learning experience.

Our main goal is for students to become the best competent individuals in the Chinese literature field, ready to compete nationally and internationally. Graduates of our study program have a wide range of career opportunities, from becoming translators, journalists, and professionals in the human resources field to the field of public relations.

History

2007

The establishment of the Chinese Literature Study Program was initiated by the Rector of Universitas Sumatera Utara, Prof. dr. H. Chairuddin P. Lubis, DTM&H, Sp. A(K), in 2007 and received full support from the Advisors to the Rector of USU. The implementation of the Chinese Literature Study Program was based on the Permit Letter from the Director General of Higher Education, Ministry of National Education, Number 3063/D/T/2006, dated August 23, 2006. The Chinese Literature Study Program at the USU Faculty of Cultural Science started admitting students in the 2007/2008 academic year. Admissions were conducted through the Independent Regular Student Admission Selection (SPMPRM). In 2007, there were 51 students interested in the Chinese Literature Study Program, and a total of 42 students were accepted.

2017

In 2017, the Chinese Literature Study Program received a B accreditation rating based on Decree Number 0403/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/S/I/2017, with an expiration date of January 26, 2022.

August 2017

According to the Decree of the Minister of Research, Technology, and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia Number 257/M/KPT/2017 on the Name of Study Programs in Higher Education Institutions, the degree conferred upon completion of the Chinese Language Study Program is Bachelor of Linguistics (S.Li.).

2019

In 2019, the Rector of Universitas Sumatera Utara issued Decree Number 1044/UN5.1.R/SK/PRS/2019 on February 4, 2019, on the Change of Name for the Chinese Literature Study Program to the Chinese Language Study Program for the undergraduate level at the Faculty of Cultural Science of the university.

2021

In 2021, the number of lecturers in the Chinese Language Study Program was 7, including 2 civil servant (PNS) lecturers, 4 permanent non-civil servant lecturers, and 1 non-permanent lecturer. The program had 27 active students, and the total number of alumni was 423.

To create and implement a conducive academic environment, both internally and externally, for the education and teaching of Chinese language, literature, and culture that is planned, integrated, and oriented on the development of the quality of graduates capable of competing at the national and international levels.
To conduct quality research and development in the fields of Chinese language, literature, and culture, which will be published in accredited national journals and reputable international journals as well as widely disseminated to stakeholders.
To develop and conduct quality interdisciplinary research in the fields of Chinese language, literature, and culture that encourage advancements in education, science, technology, social, economic, artistic, and cultural aspects that strengthen the identity of plurality, as well as will be published in nationally and internationally standardized journals and widely disseminated to stakeholders.
To establish cooperation and engage in community service with businesses as well as government and private institutions on a national or international scale in the fields of Chinese language, literature, and culture to contribute to the welfare of society.
To prepare graduates who are knowledgeable and competent in Chinese language, literature, and culture, including its diversity, and who possess character, ethics, innovation, honesty, leadership qualities, and a sense of social responsibility towards societal issues.

To produce graduates with high competitiveness in the fields of Chinese language, literature, and culture at the local, national, and international levels.
To produce graduates with a strong foundation in the fundamentals of Chinese linguistic, literary, and cultural studies, enabling them to understand, explain, and solve problems related to China and the Chinese using scientific concepts and acting as novice scholars.
To produce graduates who are open-minded and responsive to changes and advancements in the fields of Chinese language, literature, and culture.
To foster tripartite cooperation among the academic community, alumni, and service users.
To establish cooperations with businesses and other institutions, both domestically and internationally, that support the quality of education in the fields of Chinese language, literature, and culture.

Students Organization

HUASHAN

Studying in the USU Undergraduate Program in Chinese Language is more than just providing an understanding of the language and culture. Students are also given the opportunity to join campus organizations, such as the Himpunan Mahasiswa Program Studi Bahasa Mandarin (HUASHAN or the Chinese Language Study Program Student Association). HUASHAN is a student organization at the departmental level, serving as a platform for students to facilitate interaction, learning, and the exchange of knowledge among students. Students can develop their communication skills, expand their networks, and practice what they have learned in class in social situations. It's not just about mastering the language but also understanding and appreciating the diversity of social environment characters in communicating.
