FIB USU PR - On Saturday, January 10, 2026, the Faculty of Humanities, University of North Sumatra, held a celebration of World Hindi Day 2026 at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, University of North Sumatra's multipurpose building. Also in attendance were Ravi Shankar Goel and Mrs. Ruchi Goel (Consul General of India in Medan), Vipul Sharma (Deputy Consul General), Ankit Sharma (Assistant Consul General), and representatives from the University of North Sumatra, represented by the Head of the Office of International Affairs, Prof. Dr. Rudy Sofyan, S.S., M.Hum. Also in attendance were Prof. Dr. Dra. T. Thyrhaya Zein, M.A., the Dean of Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Vice Dean I Prof. Drs. Mauly Purba, MA, Ph.D., Heads and Secretaries of Study Programs, Expert Staff to the Dean, lecturers, staff, and students.
The celebration highlighted the strategic role of Hindi as a global language and strengthened the cultural ties between India and Indonesia. The event was attended by academics, students, the Indian community, and guests from various circles.
Ravi Shanker Goel, Consul General of India in Medan, emphasized the importance of Hindi in strengthening international relations.
"Hindi is spoken by hundreds of millions of people and serves as a cultural bridge between India and friendly countries like Indonesia," he said.
Prof. Dr. Dra. T. Thyrhaya Zein, M.A., Dean of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, USU, stated that language and cultural exchanges strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries. He considered academic collaboration to be an important foundation for the long-term relationship between India and Indonesia.
The celebration featured various cultural activities, including Hindi poetry readings reflecting the richness of Indian culture.
World Hindi Language Day is not just a celebration of a language. It is a celebration of heritage, identity, and dialogue across civilizations. Hindi carries centuries of philosophy, literature, and human values, connecting the wisdom of the past with the aspirations of the future.
The Faculty of Cultural Sciences also believes that language is more than just communication. Through language study, the Faculty of Cultural Sciences fosters empathy, cross-cultural understanding, and global citizenship.
"We sincerely hope this celebration will foster greater interest in Hindi among students at the University of North Sumatra, particularly those in the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, so that a Hindi study program can be established in 2026 as part of our academic and cultural development," said the Dean.
Prof. Dr. Rudy Sofyan, S.S., M.Hum., Head of the USU International Affairs Office, representing the USU Rector, emphasized the continued growth of educational and cultural cooperation between USU and India.
The event concluded with a certificate distribution ceremony, presented jointly by the Indian Consul General, the Rector of the University of North Sumatra, and the Dean of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, followed by a group photo session.
