FIB USU PR - On Tuesday, November 14, 2023, the English Literature Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB), Universitas Sumatra Utara (USU) held a Workshop on Close Reading (Cultural Studies). This workshop was attended by the head of the English Literature Study Program Mahmud Arief Albar, S.S., M.A., students and also invited Prof. Roger T. Bell as Source Person.

In understanding and appreciating literary works, close reading ability is the main key. This workshop is designed as a vehicle to equip participants with close reading skills, an in-depth approach that allows readers to explore layers of meaning and textual detail in literary works. Close reading is not just about explaining, but also absorbing, detailing and linking small elements in the text to understand the broader context and meaning.
Through close reading, participants can develop an analytical lens that allows them to see various perspectives hidden in literary texts, opens up opportunities for deeper discussions, and increases their understanding of the complexity and beauty of literature. It is hoped that this workshop will not only improve close reading skills, but also open new insights into the world of literature, enrich personal interpretations, and advance dynamic literary dialogue.
