Sastra Indonesia, USU - The Indonesian Literature Study Program of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB), Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), recently held a Guest Lecture titled "Literature and Film: Adaptation, Cultural Representation, and Contemporary Perspectives" at the FIB USU Meeting Room on Thursday (July 16, 2026). The event featured Prof. Jin Ho Shim from Silla University, Busan, South Korea, as the keynote speaker, reflecting the program's commitment to enhancing the quality of education while expanding its international academic network.
Head of the Indonesian Literature Study Program at FIB USU, Emma Marsella, S.S., M.Si., stated that the chosen theme is highly relevant to the current development of literary studies. According to her, literature is no longer understood solely as written text but also exists in various forms of representation, including film.
"The process of adaptation creates a space for dialogue between literature, culture, and contemporary society. Therefore, understanding the relationship between literature and film is essential in enriching our academic perspectives," she said.
Emma also expressed her appreciation to Prof. Jin Ho Shim for sharing his knowledge, experience, and academic insights with the FIB USU academic community. She emphasized that the presence of an international scholar would broaden students' perspectives while strengthening the faculty's academic environment.
She explained that the Guest Lecture is part of the Indonesian Literature Study Program's ongoing commitment to improving the quality of education, expanding international academic partnerships, and creating a forum for cross-cultural academic discussions. The initiative is expected to pave the way for broader collaboration in education, research, and community engagement.
Emma encouraged students to actively participate throughout the event by engaging in discussions and asking questions. She noted that learning directly from an international academic is a valuable opportunity to enhance students' knowledge and competencies.
Through this event, the Indonesian Literature Study Program hopes to establish long-term international collaboration through joint research, student and faculty exchange programs, scientific publications, and other academic initiatives.
The event concluded with a screening of Sulung Yang Ulung, a film directed by Bremakila Rangga Surbakti, S.S., an alumnus of the Indonesian Literature Study Program, Class of 2019.
