FIB USU PR - On Wednesday, September 24, 2025, the English Literature Undergraduate Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, University of North Sumatra (FIB USU), held its third guest lecture, "Literature and Linguistic Analysis." This event was held online via Zoom.
This guest lecture featured Dr. Suzana Binti Muhammad as the main speaker, with Dr. Alemina Br Parangin-Angin, S.S., M.Hum. as moderator. This event aimed to broaden students' understanding of the relationship between literary studies and linguistics as two complementary disciplines in text analysis.
In her presentation, Dr. Suzana Binti Muhammad explained how a linguistic approach can be used to study literary works in greater depth, from analyzing language structure and diction choices to the meanings constructed through the use of language in the text. Participants were encouraged to see that linguistic analysis is not merely technical but also capable of revealing the messages, ideologies, and socio-cultural contexts contained within literary works.
The event took place in an interactive atmosphere. Students demonstrated high enthusiasm through discussion and question-and-answer sessions, particularly regarding the application of linguistic analysis in the study of English literature, both in classical and modern literary works. These discussions encouraged students to think critically and analytically in understanding literary texts from various perspectives.
Through the 3rd Guest Lecture "Literature and Linguistic Analysis," the English Literature Undergraduate Program at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, University of Sumatera Utara (USU) hopes to improve the academic quality of students and strengthen the integration of literary and linguistic studies into the learning process. This activity also represents USU's Faculty of Cultural Sciences' commitment to providing adaptive, globally-minded, and relevant learning to reflect on contemporary scientific developments.
