FIB USU PR - On Tuesday, August 12, 2025, the Community Service Team (PKM) of the University of North Sumatra (USU) held an activity titled "Fostering the Younger Generation of Pujakesuma in Reviving the Javanese Deli Language and Arts as Cultural Heritage" in Binjai City.

This activity was a collaboration with the Pujakesuma organization, specifically the North Sumatra Pujakesuma Student Movement (Gema Pujakesuma), as a manifestation of academic concern for the preservation of local traditional languages and arts.

H. An Arafahan, S.H., C.L.A., as Chair of the Gema Pujakesuma North Sumatra Regional Leadership Council (DPW), expressed his high appreciation for USU's efforts in supporting the preservation of the Javanese Deli language and arts.

"The younger generation of Pujakesuma needs ongoing development to be at the forefront of preserving our ancestral heritage," he said.

Mhd. Pujiono, M.Hum., Ph.D., presented the theme "Language and Identity: Efforts to Preserve Deli Javanese from a Sociolinguistic Perspective."

In his presentation, he emphasized that language is a symbol of cultural identity that must be maintained, especially amidst the rapid flow of globalization that can erode the use of regional languages. Participants, consisting of young members of Gema Pujakesuma, actively discussed language preservation strategies, including the role of communities and social media in promoting Deli Javanese.

The event continued with a visit to the Wahyu Satrio Putro Cultural Arts Studio in Binjai. The team provided guidance on the development of Deli Javanese arts and culture, including traditional dance performances, gamelan music, and other local performing arts. The visit aimed to encourage collaboration between academics and cultural communities in an effort to revitalize traditional arts that are increasingly rarely performed in public spaces.

This Community Service Program (PKM) activity is expected to be the first step in strengthening cultural awareness among the younger generation of Pujakesuma. With synergy between campuses, community organizations, and arts communities, it is believed that the Javanese Deli language and arts can continue to live and develop as an important part of the cultural identity of North Sumatra.
