As part of efforts to preserve regional cultural heritage, the Batak Literature Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Sumatera Utara, conducted a Community Service activity entitled “Introduction and Revitalization of the Simalungun Script for Students of SDN 091311, Pargampualan Village, Panombeian Panei District, Simalungun Regency.” This activity aimed to reintroduce the traditional Simalungun script to the younger generation as one of the cultural identities that must be preserved and passed on.
Through an interactive and enjoyable approach, the students were introduced to the history, forms, and writing methods of the Simalungun Script. Various educational activities were designed to foster children’s interest and pride in their regional language and culture, while also increasing awareness of the importance of preserving local cultural heritage amid the development of the times.
This activity represents a concrete step in supporting the revitalization of regional scripts as part of intangible cultural heritage that holds strong historical value and identity for the Simalungun community. By involving the younger generation from an early age, the program is expected to cultivate a sense of ownership of ancestral culture and encourage the continued use and preservation of the Simalungun Script in the future.
