FIB USU PR - On Monday, August 11, 2025, the Doctoral Program in Linguistics, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, University of Indonesia (USU), successfully held an online public lecture titled "Intercultural Communication." The event featured speakers Barto Karen A. (University of Arizona, United States), Dr. Jessie S. Barrot (Research and Development National University, Philippines), and moderated by Prof. Dr. Erikson Saragih, M.Hum. Also in attendance were Prof. Dr. Dra. T. Thyrhaya Zein, M.A. (Dean of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, USU), the Head of Study Program and the Secretary of Study Program, lecturers, and students of the Doctoral Program in Linguistics.
This event addresses the need for internationalization of study programs, as international academic activities are a crucial indicator of developing a world-class university. Through this forum, lecturers and students gained a direct opportunity to engage in dialogue, exchange knowledge, and build cross-border academic networks that can lead to collaborative research and joint publications. Furthermore, amidst current global dynamics, intercultural communication skills are an essential competency, both in academic and professional settings. Therefore, this activity provides relevant and applicable knowledge for doctoral students.
This Guest Lecture aims to enhance the academic quality of the Linguistics Doctoral Program at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, University of North Sumatra (USU), by:
1. Providing a broader understanding of the concepts and practices of intercultural communication within the context of linguistics and global academic life.
2. Introducing cutting-edge issues in language research, linguistics, and the application of artificial intelligence in linguistic studies/language research.
3. Equipping students and lecturers with the skills to write high-quality scientific papers for publication in reputable international journals.
4. Increasing the motivation of doctoral students to actively participate in international scientific forums and strengthening their research capabilities to meet global standards.
