FIB USU PR - On Friday, August 15, 2025, the Indonesian Literature Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB), Universitas Sumatera Utara, successfully held a Guest Lecture titled “Folklore: Cultural Heritage, Identity, and Its Development” at the Faculty Meeting Room. The event featured speakers from Universiti Malaya, Datuk Prof. Dr. Kolonel (K) Awang Azman Awang Pawi, Director of the Centre for Malay Excellence Studies, Academy of Malay Studies, Universiti Malaya, as well as Prof. Dr. Dra. T. Thyrhaya Zein, M.A. (Dean of FIB), the Head and Secretary of the Indonesian Literature Study Program, and students of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences.

 

The Dean of FIB USU expressed her appreciation for the event's success. “This guest lecture provides new insights for students and serves as a concrete step in strengthening international networks. The signing of this collaboration is a real manifestation of FIB USU’s commitment to continuously contribute to developing knowledge and preserving culture at the global level,” she stated.

 

The Head of the Indonesian Literature Study Program, FIB USU, Prof. Dr. Dwi Widayati, M.Hum., also conveyed her appreciation. “We are grateful to Prof. Awang Azman Awang Pawi for sharing his knowledge and valuable experiences. The students' enthusiasm for participating in this event proves that folklore remains relevant to be studied and developed,” she remarked.

 

Through the implementation of the guest lecture and the signing of the Implementation Arrangement (IA), FIB USU affirms its position as an institution actively promoting cultural studies while fostering international academic synergy to preserve and develop the cultural heritage of universal value.

 

In his presentation, Datuk Prof. Dr. Kolonel (K) Awang Azman Awang Pawi emphasized the importance of folklore as a cultural heritage that not only represents community identity but also contributes to character building and to addressing the challenges of globalization.

The event was enthusiastically attended by students and lecturers of the Indonesian Literature Study Program. They actively engaged in the question-and-answer session, making the lecture a vibrant intellectual forum. The interactive discussion enriched participants’ understanding of folklore’s position in modern society from social, cultural, and academic perspectives.

 

A significant moment in this event was the signing of an Implementation Arrangement (IA) between the Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB), USU, and the Academy of Malay Studies, Universiti Malaya. The Dean of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, USU, Prof. Dr. Dra. T. Thyrhaya Zein, M.A., and Datuk Prof. Dr. Kolonel (K) Awang Azman Awang Pawi signed the agreement. This collaboration reaffirms both institutions’ commitment to strengthening academic cooperation, research, and cultural development, particularly in Malay and Nusantara folklore.
