Program Studi Magister (S2) Linguistik - The Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FIB USU), through its Master’s Program in Linguistics, held an academic orientation program for Master’s students in Linguistics for the 2026/2027 Academic Year on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 18–19, 2026. The program was designed to strengthen students’ academic readiness as they begin their postgraduate studies.


The program was officially opened by the Dean of FIB USU, Mhd. Pujiono, S.S., M.Hum., Ph.D., on Tuesday, August 18, 2026. The first day began with an introduction to the Academic Regulations for Postgraduate Programs, delivered by Dr. Zulfan, S.S., M.Hum. The session was followed by lectures on Semantics and Pragmatics, Morphosyntax, Oral Tradition Theory and Methods, and Phonology.


On the second day, Wednesday, August 19, 2026, students received academic guidance on Scholarly Publication, Translation Theory, Semiotics, as well as Dissertation Research and Academic Writing. These sessions were aimed at strengthening students’ understanding of academic processes, disciplinary development, research publication, and scholarly writing at the postgraduate level. The program concluded with remarks and guidance from the Dean of FIB USU.


The academic orientation featured a number of FIB USU lecturers and academics as instructors, including Dr. Gustianingsih, M.Hum.; Prof. Dr. Khairina Nasution, M.S.; Prof. Dr. Syaifuddin, M.A., Ph.D.; Dr. Tengku Syarfina, M.Hum.; Dr. Alemina Perangin-angin, M.Hum.; Dr. T. Kasa Rullah Adha, S.S., MTCSOL; Prof. Dr. Dra. T. Thyrhaya Zein, M.A.; and Prof. Dr. Erikson Saragih, M.Hum.


Through the program, students are expected to develop a stronger academic foundation before undertaking coursework and research in the Master’s Program in Linguistics. Covering topics ranging from fundamental areas of linguistics to scholarly publication and research, the program represents an important step in supporting students’ continuous academic development and research capacity.


The successful implementation of the program reflects FIB USU’s continued commitment to fostering a supportive postgraduate learning environment, enhancing academic quality and research capacity, and developing highly qualified and competitive human resources.
