As a form of commitment to preserving cultural heritage while strengthening cultural literacy among the younger generation, the Batak Literature Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Sumatera Utara, organized the Batak Script Digitalization Learning Program at GKPI Padang Bulan Private Junior High School. The program, which took place from 12 April to 10 May 2025, was an implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education through collaboration between the university and the school in delivering innovative, engaging, and technology-relevant cultural learning.
Through this program, students were introduced to the history, values, and functions of the Batak Script as one of the cultural heritages that holds significant meaning for the Batak community. The learning process was carried out interactively through lectures, reading and writing practice in the Batak Script, and the use of digital media as a learning tool. This approach is expected to enhance students' understanding while fostering pride in their regional cultural identity, which should be preserved and passed on to future generations.
The Batak Script Digitalization Learning Program not only serves as a means of knowledge transfer but also represents a concrete effort to preserve the existence of local culture in the digital era. Carrying the spirit of "Promoting the Batak Script to a Future Generation that is Accomplished, Civilized, and of Strong Character," this program is expected to produce a generation that is not only proficient in technology but also possesses the awareness, appreciation, and responsibility to preserve the Batak Script as part of Indonesia's cultural identity.
