As part of its commitment to strengthening culture-based learning, the Batak Literature Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Sumatera Utara, organized a public lecture entitled "Cognition and Literacy in Batak Opera." The event was designed to broaden students' understanding of Batak Opera as a medium for transmitting knowledge, cultural values, and the worldview of the Batak people. More than a traditional performing art, Batak Opera was presented as a dynamic cultural heritage that continues to evolve alongside societal changes.
Featuring Thompson Hs, Supervisor of PLOt (Batak Opera Training Center), the lecture explored Batak Opera from a broader perspective—as a form of cultural literacy that shapes the mindset, character, and identity of the Batak community. Drawing from performance examples and field experiences, the speaker provided valuable insights into the importance of documenting, preserving, and developing traditional performing arts to ensure their continued relevance in the digital age. The interactive discussions encouraged students to appreciate Batak Opera not only as an artistic performance but also as a rich source of cultural knowledge.
Through this academic forum, the Batak Literature Study Program reaffirmed its commitment to integrating cultural studies with contemporary scholarship. The program aims to inspire students to further explore the richness of local culture through research, innovation, and collaboration, ensuring that Batak Opera remains not only a preserved cultural heritage but also a living source of knowledge, creativity, and inspiration for future generations.
