FIB USU PR - Thursday, July 4 2024, the Linguistics Doctoral Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB), Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) carried out the 2nd National Mother Language Virtual Seminar with the theme "Mother language as a cultural heritage: Protection and Preservation." with resource person Prof. Dr. Cece Sobarna, M.Hum (Padjadjaran University), Dr. Suhandano, M.A (Gadjah Mada University), Prof. Dr. Jufrizal, M.Hum (Padang State University) and will be moderated by Dr. Tengku Syarfina, M.Hum (University of North Sumatra) This activity was also attended by the Dean of FIB USU Prof. Dr. Dra. T. Thyrhaya Zein M.A., Head of Linguistics Doctoral Study Program, Prof. Dr. Drs. Mulyadi, M.Hum was also attended by Lecturers and Students from the FIB USU Linguistics Doctoral Study Program via Zoom Meeting.

Mulyadi, M.Hum in his speech delivered the 2nd National Mother Language seminar with the theme "Mother language as a cultural heritage: Protection and Preservation. This seminar can be carried out with the cooperation of many parties, namely from the dean and the event committee as well as PhD students in Linguistics. We hope, of course, that this seminar can open our minds and increase our knowledge. For this reason, we thank the dean, because he has helped facilitate the holding of today's seminar. We also thank the committee who have worked hard to carry out this seminar.

I appreciate the choice of the topic of Mother Tongue as Cultural Heritage: Protection and Preservation. We know that mother tongue has an important role in preserving the culture and identity of a society." said the Dean of FIB USU.

We know that North Sumatra has ethnic and cultural diversity which is its characteristic.
I received an assignment from the Chancellor to make a Project Assignment for the development of FIB which is of course USU's advantage. Within 5 days I was assisted by friends from the head of the Study Program Secretary and it was handed over to the Chancellor of USU. USU has areas of competitive talent that include Tropical Science and Medicine, Agroindustry, Local Wisdom, Energy (sustainable), Natural Resources, Technology (appropriate), Arts (ethnic). The areas of excellence that are in accordance with FIB are the areas of Local Wisdom and Arts. Several study programs at FIB consider it necessary to document and develop the diverse heritage of North Sumatra's language, literature, arts and culture based on digital technology. Of course, related to this seminar, protection and preservation of the mother tongue with the theme of the seminar, of course we must encourage the teaching of the mother tongue in schools and educational institutions and we also hope that ladies and gentlemen can start collecting and archiving literary works of oral tradition folklore and also let's work together. Together we hold an awareness campaign about the importance of mother tongue and encourage people to use mother tongue every day.
This is what we hope for in cooperation and also push for official recognition that mother tongue is part of our cultural wealth. By maintaining and respecting our mother tongue, we also maintain cultural diversity and prevent it from becoming extinct. Through this seminar, it is hoped that the speakers will be able to broaden the participants' insight and hopefully the master's and doctoral students in Linguistics in Zoom will be interested in choosing a topic to study for their thesis and dissertation. Hopefully this seminar will run smoothly and hopefully many students will ask questions from the speaker.
