English Language

Master's Program (S-2)

As an advanced study program after the Undergraduate Program in English Literature, the Master's Program in English Language of Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) takes a more in-depth look at the English Language, including an in-depth analysis of the language's origins and etymology as well as its global impact. Supported by English literature experts with national teaching certifications and an integrated curriculum, we are determined to provide intense and effective guidance and learning experiences to our students. Our goal is to enhance students' abilities and prepare them to become competent and excellent English literature experts in their fields so that they can compete both in the national and international markets. Graduates of the Master's Program in English Language are expected to have expertise in the philosophy of science, research methodology, cross-cultural communication, sociolinguistics, and a deep understanding of crisis discourse.

Graduates of the Master's Program in English Language have the potential to pursue careers in various fields, including as translators, educators, embassy staff, or language editors.

History

2014

The Master's Program in English Language is one of the study programs at the Universitas Sumatera Utara Faculty of Cultural Science. This study program was established in the 2014/2015 academic year based on the Decree of the Rector of Universitas Sumatera Utara No. 1548/UN5.1.R/SK/PRS/2014, and it is currently accredited with a Very Good accreditation rating by the National Accreditation Agency for Higher Education (BAN-PT) through the decree dated May 16, 2023, number 1769/SK/BAN-PT/Ak.KP/M/V/2023. Since its establishment in 2014, the Master's Program in English Language has been conducting its academic activities based on the current curriculum, namely the curriculum of the year 2014, and has produced 50 graduates so far.

  1. To enhance the quality of knowledge (education, development, and research) in the English language.
  2. To disseminate research findings in the English language not only at regional and national levels but also internationally through journal publications and scientific events (seminars, conferences, etc.).
  3. To develop academic and professional cooperation (exchange of teaching staff and/or students) with similar study programs at national and international levels.
  4. To not only achieve the highest national accreditation level but also to be recognized as a study program at the international level.
