He was born on July 17, 1959, in Kampung Pasar Baru, Dolok Panribuan District, Simalungun Regency, North Sumatra Province, Indonesia. He completed his primary education at SD Negeri Dolok Marlawan in 1972, junior high school at SMP Negeri Tiga Balata in 1975, and senior high school at SMA Advent Pematang Siantar in 1979. In the same year, he enrolled in the Faculty of Literature at Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), majoring in Regional Languages, and earned his bachelor's degree in 1984. He later pursued a Master's degree in Linguistics at the USU Graduate School in 2007 and completed the program in 2009.
Since 1986, he has served as a lecturer at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Sumatera Utara. Throughout his academic career, he has been actively engaged in research, with one of his most recent studies entitled The Ornaments of Rumah Bolon Pematang Purba: A Semiotic Study (2018).
He has also actively participated in national and international academic conferences. In 2017, he served as an oral presenter at The International Conference on Sumatera's Local Wisdom: Local Wisdom for Sustainable Development. In 2018, he presented a paper entitled The Model of Conversation in the Marunjuk Ceremony of the Toba Batak Community: A Pragmatic Study at the ISLALE International Seminar. He also participated in the National Seminar on Austronesian Dispersal, Language, Genes, and Civilization (2013), presented at the USU TALENTA Research Seminar (2017), and spoke at the seminar The Role of Indigenous Communities in Increasing Tourism to Lake Toba as a National Geopark (2017).
In 2020, he contributed a paper entitled Local Wisdom of Giving Ulos in the Sari Matua Traditional Ceremony of the Toba Batak Community to the Proceedings of the International Seminar on Languages, Cultures, and History. In 2022, he published an international journal article entitled Umpama and Umpasa in the Batak Toba Language. He has also been actively involved in Batak Cultural Research and Community Service programs, including the 9th Batak Cultural Research and Community Service Program in 2015. In 2012, he participated in organizing a workshop on the development of a competency-based curriculum for the Undergraduate Program.
